Troubleshooting Tips

Sump Pumps

Sewage Pumps

My sump pump isn't working and the basement is flooding.

1.  Check the power to your pump outlet and ensure the breaker has not tripped.

2.  Check to see if your float is stuck on something.

IF you still have power and your float is not hung up, you most likely will need to have your sump pump replaced.

My sump pump is running but not emptying the pail.

The following are a few items to check to troubleshoot this issue:

1.  If it's winter, check outside at the discharge to see if the pipe is frozen.

2.  Unplug the pump then pull it out of the pail to determine if there are rocks or debris stuck in the pump.

3.  Your check valve may be faulty and not opening properly when the pump is on.  This causes the pail to not clear.

4.  If you live in an area with high iron content, it's possible the intake on your pump as well as the pipe may be obstructed with iron sediment.

5.  If it's none of the above items, your pump most likely needs to be replaced.

My sump pump is not shutting off.

This could be caused by an issue with your float. It could be hung up on something or even fouled. If your float can be replaced, try replacing it first before resorting to a new sump pump. If your float is not replaceable part, then you will need to have your sump pump replaced.

My breaker keeps tripping.

This can happen if something is caught up in the impeller which prevents it from pumping, which causes motor to overload and trip the breaker. If there's nothing caught in the impeller, this is an indicator that your sump pump is faulty and will need to be replaced.

My sewage pump alarm is going off.

Your sewage pump alarm means you have an issue with your pump which is causing the fluid level to rise.

The issues for the pump could be a bad or hung up float, a bad check valve, or a burnt out pump.

Sewage is coming up into my basement from the drains.

This is an indicator that something is wrong with your sewage pump and system.

This could result from a bad or hung up float, a bad check valve, or a burnt out sewage pump.

My breaker is tripping for my sewage pump.

When your breaker trips, it's an indicator that there is an issue with the pump.  Typical issues are:

1.  Something stuck in the impeller such as wet wipes, tampons, condoms, kids toys etc.

2.  You have a bad pump which will need to be replaced.

When do I need to consider a heat line for my sewage drain or forced main?

If any part of your sewage drain or forced main is above the frost line for your zone, you should have a heat line installed.  This will ensure you can continue using your septic system during the winter months with less risk of freezing.
